Our physical education partnership with CMU

For many years Endless Options (EO) has enjoyed a partnership with Central Methodist University (CMU) by participating in a physical education adaptation experience through the Education Department’s class methods of Adaptive Physical Education.

In the class the students learn about making adaptations and accommodations for their future students at all levels and with any disability.  This will be very important to them in their teaching careers, wherever it takes them.  There is no way to prepare for specific situations not yet revealed.  Endless Options’ piece of the partnership has been to illustrate what people with disabilities CAN do.

The class is only offered in the fall semester, and the first few sessions are spent covering specific information.
When EO gets involved, we get to spread some positive information about the characteristics of people with developmental and other disabilities.  That category is very broad, and as you might expect, one size does not fit all.  The next step of our mission is to emphasize that we will be bringing PEOPLE first, and that any disability is secondary and in some cases, may not be visible in any way.

Then comes our favorite part. For weeks a delegation from EO goes to CMU where the Methods of Adaptive Physical Education students have an opportunity to adapt or accommodate regular physical education and sports activities. The EO delegation changes some from week to week, and from year to year, but overall, we are faithful in our partnership. While this in many ways is not considered inclusive, it is something that has spread joy and learning opportunities for many years, and one that we hope will continue long in to the future.
